Our trained experts will listen to your needs and recommend solutions to help you surpass your business objectives. It's as easy as that.
What are the costs for your processing and other services?
Because each of our customers has unique needs, our processing services are customized according to the specifics of their business. Pricing is based on factors such as type of industry, method in which payments are accepted, card types accepted and a number of other variables. To receive a personalized pricing quote from one of our helpful representatives, please complete a sales inquiry form and we will respond promptly.
How long does it take to set up a merchant account?
The time it takes to establish a merchant account depends on several factors including: completeness of the application submitted, accuracy of the information provided and any required additional paperwork. After your application has been approved, it usually takes just a few days to establish the actual account and to arrange for any required training. (Canadian and international processing set-ups are completed in 10 days to two weeks.)
Why does Compass Fleet and Merchant Services need to review my credit information?
When you apply for a merchant account, you are essentially applying for an unsecured line of credit. When a transaction takes place, the cardholder is debited and the merchant is credited for the amount of the transaction. The cardholder still has chargeback rights and can dispute the transaction for up to 90 days. When a cardholder initiates a chargeback with a valid reason code, the funds are automatically taken from the merchant's account and credited back to the cardholder. Compass Fleet and Merchant Services wants to ensure that each potential merchant is financially sound, has a viable business and is operating in good faith and standing, so these disputes can be resolved with the merchant.
What will my statement look like?
To see a sample statement and understand how to read it, please visit our how to read statements guide.
Is there a contract?
Yes. We have several different contracts depending on the merchant's size and individual processing needs.
I want to start conducting transactions over the Internet. Do I need to set up a new account or can I just use my existing account?
account or can I just use my existing account? If you're already a Compass Fleet and Merchant Services merchant, a separate merchant outlet number will be provided for your online store. Please contact your Account Executive to handle this addition to your account. We can provide you with chain reporting so you can have both a separate and consolidated view of your company's credit card processing activity. If you need to build an e-commerce website, Instant Storefront™ can help you get up and running quickly.
Can a merchant outside the U.S. apply for a merchant account with Compass Fleet and Merchant Services?
Yes, merchants with legal presence in the US, Canada or Europe (e-commerce only) can be accepted for merchant services.
Can Compass Fleet and Merchant Services handle currency exchange?
Yes, we provide international currency processing. We give merchants the flexibility to price a product in a consumer's local currency, remit a transaction denominated in that currency and receive local currency into a bank account - anywhere in the world. Our "single file" processing capability allows multiple currencies to be settled in a single batch file, or you can send multiple batch files by currency type. Go to Products and Services for more information.
Will my merchant account be approved with a processing limit?
Merchant accounts are approved based on actual or projected dollar volume. Compass Fleet and Merchant Services monitors account activity and reserves the right to review accounts at any time should volume be significantly above or below the level represented on the merchant application.
Am I liable for disputed transactions?
MasterCard® and Visa® Card Association rules and regulations govern liability with respect to disputed transactions. In general, you, the merchant, are not liable for disputed retail transactions if a card was swiped through a terminal, the cardholder's signature was obtained and an authorization was obtained. When the card is not present at the time of the transaction, the merchant assumes liability for any disputed charges. Such disputes may be reversed depending on the timing and nature of the cardholder claim. Compass Fleet and Merchant Services provides products and services to help our merchants manage this process efficiently.
How do I receive payment for the transactions I submit to Compass Fleet and Merchant Services?
Using Automated Clearing House (ACH), Compass Fleet and Merchant Services will remit funds due for your MasterCard, Visa, Diners Card®/Carte Blanche® and JCB transactions to your business bank account. When/if you establish a service agreement with American Express® and/or Discover®, these issuers will obtain your banking information and pay funds directly to your bank account.
How can I view my account information?
Compass Fleet and Merchant Services offers several online and offline tools to access information about your merchant account. With these tools you can view, download and import account information such as transaction activity, deposits, funding, chargebacks, retrievals and statement information. Learn more about Compass Fleet and Merchant Services's online data options.
When should I inform my current payment processor that I will be closing my account?
You should wait until your account is set up to process your transactions through Compass Fleet and Merchant Services. Once you're ready to process with us, you can inform your previous provider.

Payment Processing Information
What is Compass Fleet and Merchant Services's role in processing transactions
Compass Fleet and Merchant Services is a payment processor. We enable your business to authorize and transmit transactions by virtually all types of credit and debit card, as well as gift card. We also settle the funds through the payment brands (e.g., MasterCard® and Visa®) and deposit funds to your checking account. In addition, we handle adjustments, chargeback processing, merchant billing and account activity reporting
Can I see transaction information now, without having to wait for my statement?
Our Web-based reporting tools, like Paymentech Online and Resource Online, can provide you with up-to-date daily transaction information.
What is check verification? Do I need it?
Check verification is a risk management service that verifies the authenticity of each check and/or its presenter. eCheck transactions are verified through a third-party database that gathers information from major retailers and banks about bad checks and bank accounts that are in a negative status due to returns for insufficient funds or that have been closed. While check verification service is not required, this service does help keep your business losses to a minimum..
What are interchange fees?
Interchange fees are transaction-related costs that Compass Fleet and Merchant Services pays to the issuer of the card. These fees are established by MasterCard and Visa and are based upon how a transaction takes place and in what type of industry.
As a merchant, what types of credit cards can I accept?
Compass Fleet and Merchant Services allows you to accept MasterCard, Visa, American Express®, Discover®, Diners Club®/Carte Blanche® and JCB cards. Although we can support all credit card types, we only have the ability to directly fund merchants for MasterCard, Visa, Diners Club/Carte Blanche and JCB. When processing occurs, each transaction must be authorized, the data must be captured and settlement/funding made back to the merchant.
What are debit cards?
Debit cards are another payment method. When goods or services are purchased with a debit card, the funds are removed from the customer's checking account. In addition to standard ATM cards, many banks also issue Visa® Check Cards and/or MasterCard® Check Cards - both of which can be used at the point of sale or online. For More information, see our Debit Card page.
What are the major types of debit card transactions?
Debit card transactions can be accomplished through PIN debit (requires the consumer to enter a PIN), signature debit (no PIN required), online bill payment and online debit. Debit card transactions are the fastest growing point-of-sale payment method today. The acceptance of this payment method continues to remain popular because customers and merchants both appreciate the convenience and ease of using debit cards to purchase merchandise and services.
What is the difference between PIN debit and signature debit?
The difference between these two debit choices is whether a PIN (personal identification number) is used at the point of sale. When a PIN is used, the payment is immediately withdrawn from the cardholder's available funds. When a signature debit transaction occurs, funds are not withdrawn until the transaction processes - usually 2-4 days after the sale.
What are commercial cards?
Commercial cards - corporate, business, purchasing - are issued to businesses as an alternative way of financing expenses such as supplies, business travel and entertainment, and other purchases that may have required a purchase order otherwise. These cards, often referred to as purchase cards, also provide businesses with specific reporting advantages. By using a commercial card, cardholders get itemized records of all their purchases, which simplifies reimbursement procedures and helps track expenses. This specialized reporting is possible because specific data is captured at the point of sale. MasterCard and Visa each provide issuers with the ability to issue commercial card products.
What is a private label card?
A private label card is a credit card issued under the name of a particular merchant organization. Merchants offer it as an incentive for cardholders to spend money at their businesses. Cardholders receive benefits (special discounts, deferred payment schedules, frequency points, etc.) for using the private label card instead of the more common methods of payment such as Visa, MasterCard or American Express. Typically, private label cards carry the brand of the merchant issuing the card.
What is a stored value program?
A stored value program allows you to offer your customers and employees a proprietary card pre-loaded with value for future purchases. Although there are many different applications for stored value cards (Gift Card, Merchandise Return, Prepaid), they all share some common components:
  • Magnetic Stripe Cards - The merchant gives a consumer an electronic stored value card in exchange for a pre-payment. Typically, the card includes a magnetic stripe, the merchant's name or logo and an account number.
  • Transaction Processing - The merchant can process stored value transactions from the point of sale. These transactions are delivered to Compass Fleet and Merchant Services's authorization system for processing in real time. Account balances are maintained for all cards within our system.
  • Merchant Reporting – The merchant receives reporting that provides information about the transactions processed during a period of time and the outstanding balances of their cards.
Learn more about Compass Fleet and Merchant Services's Gift Card Program, and how it can help you grow your business.
What is Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT)?
EBT is the automation of cash or cash-like benefits through electronic authorization, data capture and settlement processes. This is accomplished with the use of plastic, magnetic-striped cards at the point-of-sale. The end result is the elimination of coupon benefits distribution. The electronic process results in increased security, thereby reducing fraud and benefit misuse.
What is Electronic Check Processing (ECP)?
ECP is a transaction via ACH (Automated Clearing House) or facsimile draft sent by a merchant to directly debit or credit a customer's checking or savings account. ECP processing is often used for recurring payments, such as monthly membership fees, and is available in the United States and Canada

Data Compromise
What is a Cardholder Data Compromise?
Cardholder data compromise occurs when a merchant’s payment system is breached and cardholder account information is stolen. When a data compromise occurs, it is critical to contain the damage quickly to protect customer data and immediately identify the root cause of the event. Merchants must produce an accurate record of events for authorities.
How is a Cardholder Data Compromise identified?
Any suspicion of potential cardholder data compromise is reported to the payment brands (Visa® and MasterCard®) by law enforcement, issuing banks and/or you, the merchant.
How do I determine if there is a data compromise?
Security breaches can appear in different forms. Staying alert for the following suspicious activities can help identify potential risks:
  • Unexpected outgoing Internet traffic
  • Unexpected network traffic and IP addresses
  • Unknown files, software and devices installed on your systems
  • Antivirus programs malfunctioning or becoming disabled
  • Unknown applications configured to launch automatically upon your system reboot
  • Suspicious after-hours system activity
  • Presence of .zip, .rar, .tar and other types of unidentified compressed files containing cardholder data
What steps should I take when suspicious of a data compromise?
  1. Contain and limit the exposure – It is very important to preserve evidence and assist with the investigation to minimize the risk exposure. You should adhere to the following:
  • Do not access or alter a compromised system Do not turn the compromised system off, but isolate it from th
  • Preserve logs and continue to log all actions taken
  • If using a wireless network, change the access point
  • Monitor all traffic on systems containing cardholder data
  2. Provide notification – Merchants should contact their Incident Response Team (internal management and legal personnel) and provide an incident report to Compass Fleet and Merchant Services within 24 hours. Compass Fleet and Merchant Services will advise a merchant of next steps and provide applicable notification to the payment brands (Visa and MasterCard). An incident report must contain the following information:
  • Brief description of the business and merchant identification number
  • Details of the data breach, including who, what, when and where
  • Type of stored cardholder data, such as account number, secure code (CVV2, CVC2, etc.) and/or full content of magnetic stripes
  • Steps taken to contain the incident
  • Law enforcement notifications, if applicable
  3. Follow your legal requirements – In addition to the contractual obligations with Compass Fleet and Merchant Services, you should consult with its legal department to adhere to applicable Federal, State and Local law notification requirements.
What happens during a Cardholder Data Compromise investigation?
  1. Forensic investigation – Upon review of an incident report, Visa or MasterCard may request that the merchant bring in a Qualified Incident Response Assessor (QIRA) to perform a forensic investigation within a specific time frame. Conducting a forensic investigation helps determine if there is evidence or risk of a compromise, and the time period of the compromise.
  2. Report findings – When the investigation is complete, the QIRA will provide a forensic report to the merchant and the report will be shared with Compass Fleet and Merchant Services, Visa and MasterCard. Compass Fleet and Merchant Services will coordinate a review of the findings and the required follow-up actions identified in the report
  3. Accounts at risk – The QIRA and Compass Fleet and Merchant Services will provide Visa and MasterCard with the cardholder accounts that were processed during the at-risk time period. Visa and MasterCard will then notify the corresponding Issuers. Issuers are given a deadline to report any related fraud to the payment card brands.
  4. Expenses, fines and liabilities – The merchant is responsible for bringing in the QIRA, if required. Visa and MasterCard will assess separate fines for lack of compliance, which led to the breach. In some cases, there are also assessments for incremental fraud and for monitoring or re-issuing cardholder accounts.
  5. Compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard – Any entity that has suffered a hack or attack is required to validate PCI compliance. The forensic investigation will not close until the merchant has provided a Report of Compliance or Self Assessment Questionnaire, in addition to Quarterly Network Scans.
Common Point of Purchase
What is a Common Point of Purchase (CPP) Investigation?
A CPP investigation is initiated when multiple fraudulent transactions are identified, and determined to have originated from a common location. The "common location" becomes the CPP.
Did the fraud take place at my location?
No. The CPP merchant location is where the cardholder data was stolen, or where a data security breach may have occurred. The stolen card data is then used for fraudulent purchases at other merchant locations.
Who reported the fraudulent activity?
CPP locations are reported to the payment brands (Visa and MasterCard) by law enforcement and issuing banks. Once reported, the appropriate payment brand examines the claim to determine if a CPP or forensic investigation is necessary.
What do I do if my business is reported as a CPP location?
If your business is reported as a CPP location, Compass Fleet and Merchant Services will contact you. The payment brand involved will then provide a questionnaire for you to complete, as well as details from the report that will assist you with your own internal investigation. You will be given a deadline for submitting the questionnaire to Compass Fleet and Merchant Services.
What will Compass Fleet and Merchant Services do if my business is reported as a CPP location?
Compass Fleet and Merchant Services submits the questionnaire to the involved payment brand. The payment brand will determine if a skimming event or potential network intrusion may have occurred.

Orbital Payment Gateway
What is a payment gateway?
Typically, it's a third-party technology service that enables cyber-storefronts to securely transmit their payments to a payment processor over the Internet. Compass Fleet and Merchant Services now offers this service directly to our customers. Learn more about the Orbital® Payment Gateway.
Why does my business need a gateway?
A payment gateway is beneficial for several reasons. E-commerce offers limitless revenue opportunities and a gateway enables you to tap into its exploding potential by giving your customers a simple, secure and compelling way to make purchases. Conducting business transactions over the Internet can be less expensive and more convenient than using a dial-up, frame relay or leased line. And, finally a payment gateway gives you an easy-to-use, accessible interface that lets you review batches and exceptions and manage your merchant account whenever you want.
Is the Orbital® Payment Gateway a third-party service?
No. We operate the gateway in-house so you don't have to contract with a separate third-party provider. This service simplifies your life by letting you deal with just one vendor for an entire set of services that includes the gateway interface, payment processing and merchant funding.
As a merchant, do I need any special equipment or separate phone lines to access and use the Orbital Gateway?
No, there is no special equipment or separate telephone line required to use the Compass Fleet and Merchant Services gateway. However, since the Orbital Payment Gateway service uses a virtual terminal interface that works with traditional Internet browsers, you must have Internet access.
Can I view my current account information and transactions online?
Absolutely! We know you're busy running your business and need to access your account information and transaction activity when it's most convenient for you. Keeping your needs in mind and maintaining our commitment to exceptional customer service, you can access the Orbital Virtual Terminal 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Where do I get the interface information, and how do I sign up for the gateway?
You can establish processing by working with an online store builder provider such as our Instant Storefront.
What costs are involved in using the gateway?
By securely transmitting data via the Internet, there are no additional telecommunication costs that are incurred when transmitting via leased line, frame relay or dial up. Transaction and monthly fees apply for use of the service.
How long does it take to go live?
Lead times will vary based on the type of interface you select and the available technical resources. Since our partners have already completed the integration, if you use one of those services, you can typically go live within 48 hours of submitting a merchant application.
What level of technical support exists for implementing Orbital Payment Gateway?
Compass Fleet and Merchant Services provides three levels of technical support for implementing the Orbital Payment Gateway.
  • Initially, Technical Consulting is available to assist in preparation for establishing the interfaces.
  • Once you are ready to test, our Merchant Certification team takes over to ensure the interface is complete.
  • When you go live, Compass Fleet and Merchant Services's Application Support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Does the gateway support any other payment processors?
The service is a proprietary system of Compass Fleet and Merchant Services and is only available to our merchants. If you are using another payment processor, you will need to establish a merchant account with Compass Fleet and Merchant Services in order to utilize the Orbital Gateway.
Can I process transactions from my Web site, call center and mail order department?
Yes. The Orbital Gateway interface supports transactions from any card-not-present sales channel. You will simply need to integrate your order processing system with our gateway. Please contact your account manager or a sales representative for more information.
Does the gateway provide fraud-detection services?
Currently the system supports Compass Fleet and Merchant Services's proprietary suite of fraud services, Safetech? and AVS and CVV2 card verification services (CVC, CID).

More than one person from my company will need to use the Orbital Virtual Terminal. Do I need to get separate logins for each user?
Each user is provided a unique login. The Virtual Terminal supports multiple logins with flexible access permissions. You can establish logins that will allow the user to authorize only, authorize and capture - but not refund - while other users may log in with full access.
Can I have multiple Virtual Terminals?
Yes. Each Orbital Virtual Terminal account represents one merchant identification number. As such, you may have multiple Virtual Terminals established, with each account set up for an individual merchant identification number.
Does the terminal capture items that will then be charged to a cardholder?
Yes. If you only authorize an item, you will need to mark it for capture. This is done by opening a batch, selecting the authorized item and then marking it for capture. If the item was already processed as an authorize-and-capture transaction, there are no additional steps you need to perform.
Do I have to close out the terminal every day?
Yes, the terminal must be closed out every day using one of the following options: you may log in daily and close all batches, by clicking Settle under the Open Batch tab; or at the time of setup, Compass Fleet and Merchant Services can establish an Auto-Close option for you. Under this option, we will automatically close open batches at a pre-scheduled time every day. You can then select this Auto-Close Yime during the application process for the Orbital Virtual Terminal and it will automatically close out every day for you.
Does the system report activity by user login?
Yes, the Virtual Terminal allows you to search and generate reports based on user login.
How do I authorize a card?
After logging in, you will be presented with a New Order screen. In this mode, you can authorize only or authorize and capture a card transaction.
How do I charge a cardholder?
Charging an account requires three events: first, you must authorize the transaction. Second, you must capture the transaction. You have the option to “authorize only” or “authorize and capture” transactions. Then you can settle the system manually or by using the auto settle feature below the admin tab. And last, you must close open batches. The Virtual Terminal enables you to perform each of these steps as individual processes, or they can be consolidated into a single auto-close process. In this mode, you may process an authorization and a capture as a single transaction, and also be set up for a daily auto-close of open batches. When set up this way, you only need process the single auth/capture transaction and the Orbital Virtual Terminal does the rest. All items that are marked for capture will then be released for cardholder billing.
If I make an error entering data, how do I correct it?
As long as you have not executed a function, corrections are easy. The Clear button clears all fields and lets you start over. If you have completed the transaction, you can use the Void feature to cancel the transaction. If you entered a transaction in error, you also have the ability to void the transaction under the Open Batch tab.
If I have a question, where do I go for support?
A staffed support center is available 24 hours a day. At the time of setup, the merchant is provided a toll-free number and an e-mail address to contact for all support questions.

  • CVV and CVVC - a verification process that utilizes a three or four-digit code printed on the reverse of a card in the signature panel; used when authorizing credit card transactions where the physical card is not present.
  • CID - American Express’ verification process that utilized a four-digit code printed on the front of the card, just above the primary account number; used when authorizing credit card transactions where the physical card is not present.

If I have an existing merchant account with Compass Fleet and Merchant Services, can my company be set up to use iTerminal or must I establish a new merchant ID?
In some cases, we can use your existing merchant numbers to set up your access to iTerminal. In other cases, however, new identification numbers are needed. If you are an existing merchant, please contact your account executive to find out.
How long does it take to set up iTerminal?
After your merchant account is approved and set up, iTerminal is normally activated within 48 hours. Contact your account executive or sales representative for further information and for assistance in establishing an account

Yes. The system is available on a 24/7 basis. The iTerminal system has an automatic time-out feature, based on 20 minutes of inactivity, to help reduce the risk of unauthorized use of the system. After 20 minutes of inactivity, you will be required to log back into the system in order to perform an activity.
Can I have multiple iTerminal accounts?
Yes. Each account represents one merchant identification number. As such, you may have multiple iTerminal accounts established, with each account set up for an individual merchant identification number. iTerminal also allows for multiple terminals so you may maintain separate batches.
Does the terminal capture items that will then be charged to a cardholder?

Do I have to close out the terminal every day?
Yes, the batches must be closed every day using one of the following options: you may log in daily and close all batches, or at the time of setup, Compass Fleet and Merchant Services can establish an auto-close option for you. Under this option, we will automatically close open batches at a pre-scheduled time every day. You can then select this auto-close time during the application process and it will automatically close out every day for you.
Does the system report activity by user login?
Yes, iTerminal allows you to search and generate reports based on user login.
How do I authorize a card?
After logging in, you will be presented with a New Order screen where you can process an authorization-only transaction, sale, prior authorization, or refund.
How do I charge a cardholder?
Charging an account requires two events: first, you must authorize the transaction, and then you must close open batches. iTerminal enables you to perform each of these steps as individual processes, or they can be consolidated into a single auto-close process. When set up this way, you only need process the transaction and iTerminal does the rest. All items that are captured in the batch will then be released for cardholder billing.
If I make an error entering data, how do I correct it?
As long as you have not executed a function, corrections are easy. The Clear button clears all fields and lets you start over. If you have completed the transaction, you can use the Void feature to cancel the transaction.
If I have a question, where do I go for support?
A staffed support center is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. At the time of setup, the merchant is provided a toll-free number and an e-mail address to contact for all support questions.
